Ingredients
Here’s what goes into this creamy jalapeño cheddar spread and what each ingredient contributes.
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened — Creates the smooth, creamy foundation of the spread. Softening it first makes the other ingredients much easier to incorporate.
- 1 cup finely shredded sharp cheddar cheese — Adds bold, tangy cheese flavor and a little texture.
- 1–2 fresh jalapeños, finely minced — Provide fresh pepper flavor, crunch, and customizable heat.
- 2 cloves garlic, finely minced — Add a strong savory, aromatic note.
- 2 tablespoons green onions, finely chopped — Bring mild onion flavor and freshness.
- 2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped — Adds a bright herbal note that pairs naturally with jalapeño and lime.
- 1 tablespoon fresh lime juice — Cuts through the richness of the cream cheese and cheddar with fresh acidity.
- 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil — Adds richness and helps give the spread a smoother consistency.
- ½ teaspoon onion powder — Reinforces the savory onion flavor throughout the cream cheese base.
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika — Provides subtle smokiness and warm flavor.
- ¼ teaspoon black pepper — Adds gentle peppery warmth.
- ¼ teaspoon salt — Enhances the other flavors. Adjust according to the saltiness of your cheddar.
- ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes, optional — Adds another layer of heat for a spicier version.
Instructions
This easy no-cook recipe requires just a few minutes of mixing.
Wash and dry the fresh jalapeños.
Cut off the stems and slice the peppers lengthwise.
For a milder spread, remove the seeds and inner membranes before finely mincing the peppers.
For more heat, leave some or all of the membranes intact.
Finely mince the jalapeños so the heat and fresh chile flavor are distributed throughout the spread.
Place the softened cream cheese in a medium mixing bowl.
Stir or beat briefly until smooth and creamy.
Starting with properly softened cream cheese makes it much easier to evenly distribute the cheddar, jalapeño, garlic, and herbs.
Add the minced garlic, fresh lime juice, extra-virgin olive oil, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, and optional red pepper flakes.
Stir until thoroughly incorporated into the cream cheese.
Add the finely shredded sharp cheddar, minced jalapeños, chopped green onions, and fresh cilantro.
Fold everything together until the cheese, vegetables, and herbs are evenly distributed throughout the cream cheese mixture.
Taste the spread.
For more heat, add additional minced jalapeño or a pinch of red pepper flakes.
For more brightness, add a small squeeze of fresh lime juice.
If you want a smokier flavor, add another small pinch of smoked paprika.
Remember that the jalapeño and garlic flavors will become more noticeable after the spread rests.
Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
For the best flavor, chill for 1–2 hours before serving.
This resting period gives the jalapeño, garlic, cilantro, lime, and spices time to flavor the creamy cheese base.
Transfer the spread to a serving bowl.
Garnish with a little extra shredded cheddar, thinly sliced jalapeño, chopped green onion, cilantro, and a light sprinkle of smoked paprika.
Serve chilled or allow it to soften slightly before spreading.
