Instructions
This easy cheese spread comes together in a few simple steps. The most important details are draining the roasted peppers thoroughly, softening the cream cheese, and allowing enough chilling time for the flavors to develop.
Step 1: Prepare the Roasted Red Peppers
If using jarred roasted red peppers, remove them from the jar and place them in a strainer.
Allow any excess liquid to drain.
Transfer the peppers to a paper towel-lined plate and pat them dry.
This step is important because excess moisture can make the finished cheese spread watery.
Once dry, finely chop the peppers into small pieces.
Small pieces distribute more evenly throughout the cream cheese and make the spread easier to scoop and serve.
If using freshly roasted red peppers, roast them until the skins are blistered and charred.
Transfer the hot peppers to a covered bowl and allow them to steam for approximately 10 minutes.
Carefully peel away the loosened skins, remove the stems and seeds, and finely chop the flesh.
Allow freshly roasted peppers to cool completely before adding them to the cream cheese.
Step 2: Soften the Cream Cheese
Place the cream cheese in a medium mixing bowl.
Allow it to soften until it can be easily mixed with a spoon or electric hand mixer.
Softened cream cheese is essential for a smooth, creamy consistency.
Avoid melting the cream cheese because the spread should remain thick enough to hold its shape.
Step 3: Beat the Cream Cheese and Honey
Add 2 tablespoons of honey to the softened cream cheese.
Using a sturdy spoon, spatula, or electric hand mixer, beat until smooth.
Continue mixing until the honey is evenly incorporated.
The mixture should look creamy and slightly glossy.
Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
Step 4: Prepare the Jalapeño
Wash and dry the fresh jalapeño.
Remove the stem and cut the pepper lengthwise.
For a milder spread, remove the seeds and white membranes.
For a spicier version, leave some of the membranes intact.
Finely mince the jalapeño.
The smaller the pieces, the more evenly the heat will be distributed.
Wash your hands thoroughly after handling hot peppers, and avoid touching your eyes.
Step 5: Add the Roasted Peppers and Jalapeño
Add the finely chopped roasted red peppers to the cream cheese mixture.
Add the minced jalapeño.
Stir gently until the peppers are evenly distributed.
The spread should begin developing a colorful appearance, with red and green pepper pieces throughout the creamy base.
Step 6: Add the Fresh Garlic
Finely mince or grate the garlic clove.
Add it to the mixture.
Fresh garlic can have a strong flavor, so make sure it’s evenly incorporated.
For a milder garlic taste, use a slightly smaller clove.
Step 7: Add the Seasonings
Pour in the fresh lemon juice.
Add the smoked paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, and salt.
Stir thoroughly until the seasonings are evenly distributed.
Taste a small amount.
If the spread needs more sweetness, add a little honey.
If it needs more brightness, add a few drops of lemon juice.
If you prefer more heat, add a small amount of additional minced jalapeño.
Step 8: Fold in the Fresh Herbs
Add the finely chopped parsley or cilantro.
Fold gently until evenly distributed.
The herbs provide freshness and color while balancing the rich cream cheese.
Step 9: Add the Optional Cheddar
If using shredded sharp cheddar cheese, add 1/4 cup to the mixture.
Stir until incorporated.
For the smoothest texture, use finely shredded cheddar.
The cheddar adds a stronger cheese flavor and creates a slightly thicker, heartier spread.
Step 10: Chill the Spread
Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap or transfer the spread to an airtight container.
Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
For the best flavor, chill for approximately 1–2 hours.
During this time, the honey, roasted peppers, garlic, jalapeño, and seasonings have an opportunity to blend.
The cream cheese will also firm up slightly.
Step 11: Transfer to a Serving Bowl
Remove the spread from the refrigerator.
If it’s very firm, allow it to sit at room temperature for approximately 10 minutes.
Stir gently to restore a smooth, spreadable consistency.
Transfer it to a small decorative serving bowl.
Use the back of a spoon to create soft swirls across the surface.
Step 12: Add the Garnishes
Drizzle approximately 1 teaspoon of honey over the top.
Sprinkle with a little finely chopped roasted red pepper.
Add a few thin jalapeño slices.
Finish with fresh parsley or cilantro and a pinch of smoked paprika.
These garnishes enhance both the appearance and flavor of the spread.
Step 13: Serve and Enjoy
Serve with crackers, toasted baguette slices, pita chips, warm flatbread, or fresh vegetables.
You can also spread it on bagels, sandwiches, or burgers.
Keep the spread refrigerated when not actively serving.
