Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Mix in the milk until well combined.
- Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, spices, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
- For the frosting, beat together the cream cheese and butter until smooth.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing until creamy.
- Spread the cream cheese frosting generously between the layers and atop the cake.
Notes
For a deeper flavor, consider substituting granulated sugar with brown sugar. You can also add nuts or raisins for variation.
