Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cream together the butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  4. Mix in the milk until well combined.
  5. Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, spices, and salt.
  6. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  7. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  9. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. For the frosting, beat together the cream cheese and butter until smooth.
  11. Gradually add the powdered sugar and vanilla, mixing until creamy.
  12. Spread the cream cheese frosting generously between the layers and atop the cake.

Notes

For a deeper flavor, consider substituting granulated sugar with brown sugar. You can also add nuts or raisins for variation.
