Description
Deliciously tender sour cream donuts with a glossy glaze that evoke sweet childhood memories.
Ingredients

- 2 1/4 cups cake flour (plus more for rolling)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 teaspoon iodized salt
- 3/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons shortening
- 2 large egg yolks
- 2/3 cup sour cream
- Canola oil (for frying)
- 3 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar (sifted)
- 1 1/2 teaspoons light corn syrup
- 1/4 teaspoon iodized salt
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/3 cup + 1 tablespoon hot water
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: cake flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
- Cream together the sugar and shortening until light and fluffy.
- Add in the egg yolks and sour cream, mixing until well blended.
- Combine the wet and dry ingredients, mixing gently until just combined.
- Lightly flour a clean work surface and turn the dough out onto it.
- Roll the dough to about 1/2-inch thick.
- Use a doughnut cutter to cut out shapes.
- Heat canola oil in a deep fryer to about 365°F (185°C).
- Fry the donuts a few at a time, flipping halfway, until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes on each side.
- Remove them from the oil and place them on a wire rack to cool slightly.
- In a large bowl, mix the sifted confectioners’ sugar, corn syrup, salt, vanilla extract, and hot water until smooth and glossy.
- Dip each warm donut into the glaze and allow them to drain upside-down on the wire rack.
Notes
Dough can be made in advance and chilled. Try using an air fryer for a healthier option.
