Ingredients

- 1 cup warm water (about 110°F)
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 tablespoons butter (softened)
- 1 large egg (beaten)
- 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: Pour warm water into a mixing bowl, sprinkle yeast and sugar on top, and let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
- Add the salt, softened butter, and beaten egg to the yeast mixture. Gradually add flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until elastic and smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise for 1–2 hours until doubled in size.
- Shape the rolls: Punch down the dough, divide into 12 pieces, and shape into balls.
- Arrange the rolls in a greased baking dish, cover, and allow to rise for another 30–40 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 15–20 minutes until golden brown.
- Brush the tops with melted butter once out of the oven, if desired.
Notes
You can substitute instant yeast for active dry yeast and adjust the recipe accordingly. For a vegan option, replace butter with coconut oil and use a flax egg.
