Description

A sumptuous indulgence that combines rich chocolate flavor with a velvety texture, topped with luxurious cream cheese frosting.


Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons black cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • Black gel food coloring (as needed)
  • 2 tablespoons strong brewed coffee (optional)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 23 tablespoons milk (as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the eggs, buttermilk, vanilla extract, and white vinegar, mixing until well combined.
  4. Whisk together the flour, black cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a separate bowl.
  5. Combine the dry ingredients with the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until just combined. Fold in brewed coffee and food coloring as desired.
  6. Divide the batter between the prepared pans and bake for 25–30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Allow cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. Beat together the cream cheese and butter for frosting until smooth, then gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing well.
  9. Frost one layer generously with frosting, then add the second layer and frost the top and sides.

Notes

For a lighter crumb, cake flour can be substituted. Serve with vanilla ice cream or fresh berries.
