Description

A luxurious baked casserole featuring soft bread soaked in a rich custard, layered with fresh strawberries and dusted with powdered sugar.


Ingredients

  • 1 loaf of soft bread (French or challah)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 cups fresh strawberries, sliced
  • Powdered sugar for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into cubes, about one inch in size. Layer half in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Layer half of the sliced strawberries on top of the bread.
  4. Whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugar, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon until smooth.
  5. Pour half of the egg mixture over the bread and strawberries, allowing it to soak.
  6. Add the remaining bread cubes and top with the rest of the sliced strawberries. Pour the remaining egg mixture on top.
  7. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  8. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes until puffed and golden brown.
  9. Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Make ahead by soaking overnight. Use stale bread for best results. Customize with different berries or milk alternatives.
