Description
Delightful hamburger buns made with sourdough discard, offering a perfect balance of airy and chewy texture, ready in just one hour.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup sourdough discard
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 egg (optional, for egg wash)
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- Combine the ingredients: Stir together the sourdough discard, yeast mixture, flour, salt, and olive oil until a shaggy dough forms.
- Knead the dough: Transfer the mixture to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
- Shape the buns: Divide into 8 equal pieces and shape each into a smooth ball.
- Let them rise: Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover, and let them rise for 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Optional egg wash: Brush the tops of the buns with an egg wash if desired.
- Bake to perfection: Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and sound hollow when tapped.
- Cool and enjoy: Let cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
You can prepare the dough in advance and refrigerate it. An air fryer works well if you don’t have an oven.
