Ingredients

  • 1 large loaf French bread (or 2 baguettes, halved lengthwise)
  • 1 lb ground beef (85/15 recommended)
  • 1 small onion (finely diced)
  • 1 green bell pepper (finely diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 cup tomato sauce (or Sloppy Joe sauce)
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper (to taste)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter (softened)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley (chopped, divided)
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (or cheddar)
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese (optional, for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Slice the French bread lengthwise and place both halves on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  3. Combine softened butter, minced garlic, and half of the chopped parsley in a mixing bowl.
  4. Spread the garlic butter onto the bread halves.
  5. Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until browned.
  6. Add diced onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic, and sauté for 3–4 minutes.
  7. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper.
  8. Simmer for about 5–6 minutes until thickened.
  9. Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture evenly over the garlic buttered bread halves.
  10. Top with shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
  11. Bake for 12–15 minutes until the cheese melts. Broil for 2 minutes if desired.
  12. Sprinkle remaining parsley, slice, and serve warm.
