Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the milk and sugar over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and cornstarch until smooth.
- Once the milk mixture is hot but not boiling, slowly pour it into the egg mixture while whisking continuously to temper the eggs.
- Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it thickens (about 5-7 minutes).
- Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the custard cool to room temperature.
- In a mixing bowl, whip the heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form.
- In a trifle dish, layer half of the ladyfingers at the bottom, followed by half of the custard, half of the whipped cream, and half of the mixed berries. Repeat the layers.
- Chill the trifle in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld.
