Greek Baklava is a heavenly dessert that combines layers of flaky phyllo pastry with a rich, nutty filling and a sweet syrup. Each bite offers a delightful crunch followed by a creamy, aromatic sweetness that lingers on the palate, making it an irresistible treat for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • Phyllo Dough: 1 package (16 oz), thawed
  • Walnuts: 2 cups, finely chopped
  • Pistachios: 1 cup, finely chopped
  • Butter: 1 cup (2 sticks), melted
  • Sugar: 1 cup
  • Ground Cinnamon: 1 teaspoon
  • Water: 1 cup
  • Honey: 1/2 cup
  • Vanilla Extract: 1 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the chopped walnuts, pistachios, sugar, and cinnamon.
  3. Brush a 9×13 inch baking dish with melted butter.
  4. Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough in the dish, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
  5. Spread half of the nut mixture evenly over the phyllo layers.
  6. Layer 5 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter, then add the remaining nut mixture.
  7. Top with another 10 sheets of phyllo, again brushing each with butter.
  8. Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond shapes.
  9. Bake for 45-50 minutes until golden brown.
  10. While baking, combine water, honey, and vanilla in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  11. Once baklava is done, pour the syrup evenly over it while still hot.
