  • Author: Sophie
  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 2 servings
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

Indulge in the rich, creamy texture of melted brie cheese, perfectly complemented by the sweet, sticky fig spread and the savory depth of caramelized onions. Each bite offers a delightful contrast of flavors, with the crispy, golden-brown bread providing a satisfying crunch that enhances the overall experience.

Ingredients

  • Bread: 4 slices of sourdough or whole grain bread
  • Cheese: 8 ounces of brie cheese, sliced
  • Fig Spread: 1/4 cup of fig jam
  • Onions: 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • Butter: 2 tablespoons, softened
  • Olive Oil: 1 tablespoon

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 15-20 minutes until they are caramelized and golden brown.
  2. While the onions are cooking, spread 1 tablespoon of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread.
  3. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer the brie cheese, fig spread, and caramelized onions.
  4. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.
  5. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and place the sandwiches in the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes until golden brown, then carefully flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes until the other side is golden and the cheese is melted.
  6. Remove from the skillet, slice in half, and serve warm.

Notes

  • This sandwich can be made ahead by preparing the caramelized onions and storing them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days; reheat in a skillet to maintain crispiness.
  • For a vegan option, substitute brie with a plant-based cheese and use vegan butter.
