  • 1 large baguette or Italian loaf, cut into 2-inch cubes
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 pound ground beef, Italian sausage, or a plant-based alternative
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 24 ounces marinara sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the melted butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, and salt. Toss the bread cubes until well coated.
  3. Heat a 12-inch cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add the ground meat and diced onion. Cook until browned and onion is soft, about 5-6 minutes. Drain excess fat.
  4. Stir in minced garlic, marinara sauce, oregano, black pepper, and salt. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. In a separate bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese until smooth.
  6. Remove half of the meat sauce from the skillet and set aside.
  7. Layer half of the garlic bread cubes over the remaining meat sauce. Spoon half of the ricotta mixture over the bread cubes and sprinkle with a cup of mozzarella cheese.
  8. Spoon the reserved meat sauce over the cheese layer, add the remaining garlic bread cubes, remaining ricotta mixture, and top with the rest of the mozzarella cheese.
  9. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.
  10. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with extra parsley.

Notes

Customize with your favorite veggies, and feel free to make it vegetarian with plant-based ingredients. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge or frozen for later.
