Description

Indulge in the rich, savory flavor of caramelized onions paired with the nutty, creamy essence of Gruyère cheese, all nestled between perfectly toasted bread. The addition of crisp, sweet apple slices adds a refreshing contrast, creating a delightful balance of textures and flavors that will tantalize your taste buds.

Ingredients

  • Bread: 4 slices of sourdough or whole grain bread
  • Onions: 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • Gruyère Cheese: 1 cup, grated
  • Apples: 1 medium Granny Smith apple, thinly sliced
  • Butter: 2 tablespoons, unsalted
  • Olive Oil: 1 tablespoon
  • Salt: to taste
  • Pepper: to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions, season with salt and pepper, and cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they are golden brown and caramelized.
  3. While the onions are cooking, preheat a separate skillet over medium heat.
  4. Butter one side of each slice of bread and place two slices, butter-side down, in the preheated skillet.
  5. Layer half of the grated Gruyère cheese on each slice of bread, followed by the caramelized onions and apple slices.
  6. Top with the remaining Gruyère cheese and cover with the other slices of bread, butter-side up.
  7. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  8. Remove from heat, slice in half, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • This sandwich can be made ahead by preparing the caramelized onions and storing them in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days; reheat in a skillet to maintain crispiness.
  • For a vegan option, substitute Gruyère with a plant-based cheese and use vegan butter.
