Description
A delicious twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich featuring sweet caramelized onions and rich Gruyère cheese.
Ingredients

- 2 slices of bread
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
Instructions
- In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt, cooking until they are soft and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter.
- Place one slice of bread in the skillet and top with half of the Gruyère cheese.
- Add the caramelized onions on top of the cheese, then add the remaining cheese.
- Top with the second slice of bread.
- Cook until the bottom slice is golden brown, then carefully flip the sandwich and cook the other side until golden and the cheese is melted.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add a pinch of thyme or rosemary to the onions while caramelizing.
- Use sourdough or whole grain bread for a different texture.
- Serve with a side of tomato soup for a classic pairing.
