Description

A delicious twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich featuring sweet caramelized onions and rich Gruyère cheese.


Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, melt 1 tablespoon of butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt, cooking until they are soft and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter.
  5. Place one slice of bread in the skillet and top with half of the Gruyère cheese.
  6. Add the caramelized onions on top of the cheese, then add the remaining cheese.
  7. Top with the second slice of bread.
  8. Cook until the bottom slice is golden brown, then carefully flip the sandwich and cook the other side until golden and the cheese is melted.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add a pinch of thyme or rosemary to the onions while caramelizing.
  • Use sourdough or whole grain bread for a different texture.
  • Serve with a side of tomato soup for a classic pairing.
