Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Donuts:
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
    • 1/2 cup buttermilk
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • For the Crème Brûlée Topping:
    • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for caramelizing)
    • 1/2 cup heavy cream
    • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a donut pan.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix the buttermilk, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter until well combined.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined; do not overmix.
  5. Fill each donut cavity about 2/3 full with the batter.
  6. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the donuts spring back when lightly pressed.
  7. Let the donuts cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.
  8. For the topping, heat the heavy cream and vanilla extract in a small saucepan over medium heat until just simmering. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  9. Once the donuts are cool, dip the tops in the cream mixture, then sprinkle with granulated sugar.
  10. Using a kitchen torch, carefully caramelize the sugar until golden and crispy. Allow to cool before serving.

Notes

  • Make-ahead: The donuts can be baked a day in advance and stored in an airtight container.
  • Storage: Keep the donuts at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to a week.
  • Substitutions: For a dairy-free version, use almond milk and coconut cream instead of buttermilk and heavy cream.
